Assam: Seven Missing After Boat sinks in Brahmaputra; Rescue Operations Underway

A tragic boat accident on the Brahmaputra River has left seven passengers missing after a passenger boat sank at Rahampur in the Chenga Assembly constituency of Barpeta district. Despite ongoing rescue efforts, none of the missing persons have been traced so far, officials said.

Preliminary reports suggest that the boat was not equipped with a single life jacket, raising serious concerns over safety lapses. Sources indicated that the vessel was being operated recklessly, and the accident is suspected to have occurred due to negligence and a failure to account for the strong current of the Brahmaputra.

Following the incident, public anger erupted against the administration, with local residents demanding faster and more effective rescue operations. The Rahampur area remains gripped by panic and mourning, as heart-rending scenes of relatives crying along the riverbank continue to unfold.

It is noteworthy that multiple reports in the past had pointed out violations of safety norms and negligence by boat operators on the Brahmaputra. Despite repeated warnings, neither the concerned departments nor boat operators appear to have taken adequate precautionary measures, once again putting the lives of innocent passengers at risk.

Locals have also called for strict enforcement of safety regulations and accountability to prevent such tragedies in the future. While search operations remain ongoing, authorities have said that no confirmed updates are available yet.

The incident triggered scenes of panic and grief along the riverbank as families of the missing waited anxiously for news. Local fishermen, along with official rescue teams, have been conducting intensive search operations in the river since the mishap.
