AdvertismentAt the Swahid Nyas premises in Guwahati, AASU members staged a symbolic protest, holding black flags and raising slogans against the legislation. The protest was part of a larger call issued by the North East Students' Organization (NESO), which urged all states of the Northeast to unite in a coordinated demonstration. Responding to the call, widespread anti-CAA protests were reported across the region.AASU Chief Advisor Dr. Samujjal Bhattacharjya reiterated that the people of Assam have been fighting for the protection of their identity for nearly four decades and that the movement will continue until the CAA is entirely scrapped. “CAA must be repealed—there can be no compromise. Assam will never accept this Act,” Bhattacharjya asserted. He alleged that the BJP government pushed the Act through Parliament by exploiting its numerical strength, disregarding the concerns of the Northeast.Meanwhile, the protesters also highlighted the disparity in exemption areas, noting that while 98 percent of Meghalaya remains outside the purview of the Act, only Sixth Schedule regions in 8 of Assam’s 35 districts enjoy similar protection.“This imbalance is unacceptable. Assam’s concerns cannot be ignored anymore,” an AASU leader said.Justice for Zubeen Garg Also Echoes at Protest SiteAlongside the anti-CAA demonstrations, the chief AASU advisor also addressed the recent filing of the chargesheet related to the death of singer Zubeen Garg. They demanded strict and transparent legal action, insisting that no loophole should be allowed in the investigation.“We have maintained from the very beginning that Zubeen Garg must get justice,” AASU representatives said. “The chargesheet must be watertight, and the guilty must face the highest punishment.”The dual protest—against CAA and for justice in the Zubeen Garg case—reflected the heightened public sentiment and renewed momentum of Assam’s civil movements. Also Read: Rehabilitation Drive Continues: Former BLT Cadres Receive ₹2 Lakh Each in Guwahati EventAdvertismentAdvertisment Read the Next Article
