The Jorhat MP and the deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha is supposed to explain his stand and respond to allegations leveled against him and his family that have caused a great political outburst in the state.

This occurs after CM Sarma had made high profile media briefing on Sunday claiming that Gogoi had dubious associations that might have some national security implications. The Chief Minister also claimed that Gogoi's wife Elizabeth Colebourn had spent close to one year in Pakistan and was affiliated with an NGO led by Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, who he alleged had links in the political and military circles of Pakistan.

The Chief Minister also claimed that posts on social media claiming the family connections between Gogoi and Sheikh had been removed when a Special Investigation Team started investigating the case, which also indicates an intention to destroy digital evidence. He put it in perspective as a matter of more than party politics, and one that concerned national security and diplomatic sensibilities.

The APCC chief however has quashed the claims as politically calculated and geared towards the Assembly elections. In a stinging retaliation on social media, he ridiculed the Chief Minister briefing, terming it as the most flop press conference of the century, accusing CM Sarma of selling unfounded assertions to distract people.
