The meeting was attended by AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, senior general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan, and senior leader Rajen Gohain, among others.

Briefing the media after the meeting, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi said the discussions primarily revolved around the party’s electoral strategy. “We mainly discussed the party’s battle strategy. The steering committee will take forward all decisions and coordinate the process,” he said.

Raising serious concerns over the situation in Karbi Anglong's Kheroni, Gogoi described the condition in the hill district as “extremely alarming.” “We have urged the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to immediately intervene and bring the situation under control. The situation in the hill district is very serious,” he said, adding that the recent developments were the result of the government’s failure to arrive at a lasting solution in Karbi areas.

He also said that ensuring justice in the matter involving popular singer Zubeen Garg remains an important issue for the party. “Justice for Zubeen Garg is a matter of concern for us and cannot be ignored,” Gogoi said.

On preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections, Gogoi said the meeting discussed several fundamental issues related to the polls. “We will identify which promises made by the government before the elections have not been fulfilled and take those issues to the people,” he said.

He added that the party also discussed ways to counter the BJP politically. “We will enter the elections only after realistically assessing the ground situation. Our candidates will be carefully scrutinised before final selection,” Gogoi said.

Stressing the importance of alliances, Gogoi said AJP would contest the elections in partnership with like-minded forces. “We believe that contesting the elections in alliance is necessary. Decisions on where we will contest will be taken in the next round of meetings,” he said, adding that the party plans to field candidates in every district.

Gogoi further said that several prominent personalities are expected to join the party in the coming days. “In the new year, we will work with renewed hope to strengthen the organisational base of the party,” he said.

Taking a sharp dig at the ruling BJP, Gogoi termed the promise of granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities ahead of the 2026 elections as a “lollipop.” “The promise of tribal status to six communities is nothing but an electoral lure. The BJP does not look favourably upon those demanding tribal status,” he alleged, urging the concerned communities to make a sober and objective assessment of the government’s intentions.
