The incident occurred on Friday, coinciding with Saraswati Puja, when a scooter collided head-on with a 108 ambulance, killing the woman on the spot. The deceased has been identified as Luna Bharadwaj, a resident of Bongaigaon district. She was a law graduate and had recently received an appointment letter from Axis Bank, according to family members.

108 Employees’ Association Distances Itself

Reacting strongly to the incident, the All Assam 108 Mrityunjoy Employees’ Association expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family but categorically distanced its members from the accident.

“The incident at Kahilipara is deeply unfortunate. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family. However, we want to make it clear that no worker associated with the All Assam 108 Mrityunjoy Employees’ Association is linked to this accident. This incident occurred due to GVK EMRI's negligence,” a member of the association said.

Allegations of Inexperienced, Untrained Driver

The association levelled serious allegations, claiming that the accident was caused by an inexperienced and temporarily appointed driver.

Protesting employees alleged that the driver involved was not properly trained and accused GVK EMRI of negligence, stating that such lapses endanger both patients and the general public.

“The government has allowed untrained and temporary staff to operate emergency vehicles. This accident is a result of administrative failure and poor oversight,” the association alleged.

Victim’s Companion Critical

At the time of the accident, Luna Bharadwaj was travelling with Achyut Baruah, a resident of Jatia in Guwahati, originally from Dergaon in Golaghat district. He sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where his condition remains critical.

Family Alleges Drunk Driving, Hospital Lapses

Family members of the deceased have alleged that the ambulance driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash and demanded strict action.

Further compounding the family’s grief, Luna’s brother-in-law alleged gross mismanagement at GMCH, claiming that no ward boys were available, forcing him to carry the body himself.

“The government talks about massive recruitments, but there isn’t even a ward boy available at GMCH,” he said, expressing anguish and anger.
