AssamAssam: 189 Tonne Semiconductor Machinery Delivered to Tata Facility via Brahmaputra WaterwayThe Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) played a pivotal role in coordinating the movement, working closely with port handlers and logistics partners to ensure the safe arrival of the machinery. DY365 Feb 16, 2026 12:05 ISTGuwahati: In a major logistics feat for India’s burgeoning semiconductor sector, a 189.26-tonne consignment of oversized industrial equipment has arrived in Assam, destined for the Tata semiconductor assembly plant in Morigaon district.AdvertismentThe shipment was transported using inland waterways, highlighting efforts to increase multimodal supply chain options for large-scale industrial projects in the state. The bulky cargo, comprising specialised machinery necessary for semiconductor assembly and testing operations, was shipped from Diamond Harbour and navigated upstream on National Waterway-2 along the Brahmaputra River. It reached the port at Pandu in Guwahati, where further inland transportation arrangements are being completed before the equipment is moved to the facility site in Assam's Morigaon district.Officials involved in the operation emphasised that using the river route offered a practical alternative to long road journeys, which can be more costly and challenging for over-dimensional consignments. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) played a pivotal role in coordinating the movement, working closely with port handlers and logistics partners to ensure the safe arrival of the machinery. This delivery marks a key milestone in the ongoing development of the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility in Jagiroad, which is part of a broader push to establish advanced electronics manufacturing capabilities in Assam under the India Semiconductor Mission. Once operational, the plant is expected to significantly boost local manufacturing capacity and create employment opportunities in the region. The successful use of inland waterways for such a substantial load also underscores the potential of river transport as an efficient and environmentally sustainable mode for heavy industrial logistics, supporting India’s industrial and infrastructure ambitions in the northeast. Also Read: BREAKING: Major Blow to Congress in Assam as Bhupen Kumar Borah Steps Down from PartyAdvertismentAdvertisment Read the Next Article
