Assam: BJP MLA Hemanga Thakuria denies allegations of demanding money for land deals, calls it political conspiracy

Thakuria alleged that the audio had been deliberately edited and circulated by politically motivated individuals seeking to damage his reputation ahead of key developments. He pointed to the massive turnout—over 10,000 people from his constituency—at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Assam visit on December 20 as evidence of his unwavering public support.

The MLA claimed the substantial development works carried out in Palashbari in recent years, asserting that residents continue to stand solidly behind him. He claimed his rising popularity has rattled not just opposition parties but also certain ticket aspirants coveting the Palashbari seat, whom he accused of orchestrating the controversy.

Dismissing the specific charge of involvement in selling 300 bighas of land, Thakuria questioned how such allegations could arise when he owns no property in the area—a fact he contrasted with several former MLAs and ministers.

Thakuria launched a counter-attack on the individual allegedly responsible for spreading the clip, accusing him of a dubious history that includes police cases in Delhi and purported ties to cattle smuggling and betel nut rackets. He further claimed the person had previously insulted the BJP by burning party flags, vandalising offices, and disrespecting a portrait of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Challenging his accuser directly, Thakuria dared the individual to substantiate the claims with evidence, offering to resign from his MLA position if proven true. He urged the media to scrutinise the person behind the audio instead.

Reaffirming his and the BJP's commitment to integrity, Thakuria announced that a formal complaint about the matter would be lodged with the state BJP president the same day.

A dedicated party worker, the MLA expressed confidence that the people of Palashbari remain firmly with him—estimating nearly 90 per cent support—and warned that the BJP would never field a candidate with a record of disrespecting the party. He vowed to protest, even in Delhi if necessary, should such a scenario arise.

Thakuria maintained that the fabricated audio cannot erode the deep bond he shares with his constituents.
