Guwahati: The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday sharpened its political offensive against state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, alleging that he was absent from Republic Day celebrations.

In a post on social media platform X, BJP Assam claimed Gogoi could not be “located” on one of the country’s most significant national occasions. “We are hereby reporting a missing person. On this Republic Day of India, the people of Assam have been unable to locate Gaurav Gogoi celebrating this special day of our nation,” the party said. While adding that Gogoi was not legally obliged to mark the occasion, the BJP remarked it remained “hopeful to be proven wrong,” suggesting that even a single photograph of him unfurling the national flag would suffice.

State Minister Pijush Hazarika echoed the charge, asserting that sources within the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee had confirmed Gogoi did not attend Republic Day celebrations in Guwahati. “My sources in @INCAssam confirmed that their President skipped Republic Day celebrations in Guwahati,” Hazarika wrote on X.

The fresh allegations come amid an ongoing BJP campaign targeting Gogoi over his alleged links to Pakistan—claims that have dominated Assam’s political discourse in recent months. Senior BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, have repeatedly accused Gogoi of maintaining questionable associations connected to Pakistan, arguing that such links raise concerns over his political intent and credibility.

Gogoi and the Congress have consistently dismissed the accusations as baseless and politically motivated, accusing the BJP of weaponising nationalism to discredit opponents and divert attention from governance-related issues. The party has maintained that the attacks are part of a broader attempt to polarise voters ahead of key electoral contests.
