"Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet on Saturday referred a case linked to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and alleged foreign connections to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), citing national security implications and limitations in the state"s investigative jurisdiction.Advertisment Chief Minister and Cabinet sources said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had gathered multiple inputs regarding alleged links involving Gogoi"s wife Elizabeth Gogoi and foreign entities, including Pakistan. The Cabinet discussed in detail the SIT report on alleged anti-India activities involving Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, advisor to the Pakistan Planning Commission, and others. Based on the gravity of the findings and the international dimension of the case, the state government decided to transfer the matter to the Centre and appealed for investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) or any other national agency. Officials said the state government cannot legally access sensitive cross-border telecommunication data, including alleged calls to Pakistan during 2016–17, and such information can only be retrieved by central agencies. The MHA will decide which agency will take over further investigation. CM Sarma"s Statement Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Assam government had constituted an SIT to probe the alleged conspiracy. “The Assam government constituted an SIT to inquire into the alleged anti-India conspiracy of Ali Tauqeer Sheikh in connivance with British citizen Elizabeth Gogoi. The case has been investigated and sensitive materials have been obtained from various sources. However, the SIT has reported that beyond a point it may not be possible to continue the investigation, as it requires Interpol assistance and highly sensitive information from the Government of India and Parliament. Therefore, it has been decided that the case will be entrusted to a central agency to be selected by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Once that is done, the state government will transfer the case accordingly,” Sarma said.
