Assam CM Orders Probe After Jamunamukh Train Accident; Two Drivers Detained, Engine Seized

Following a tragic train accident at Jamunamukh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed a detailed investigation into the incident. In line with his instructions, two train drivers involved in the mishap were taken into custody, and the train engine was seized.

Rail services on the affected stretch, which had been suspended immediately after the accident, were resumed today.

Earlier, CM Sarma expressed his grief over the loss of wildlife, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the death of seven elephants — three adults and four calves — in a tragic train collision earlier today. I have directed the Forest Department to conduct a detailed enquiry on this deeply disturbing accident and take steps to further secure our wildlife corridors, particularly during low visibility seasons.”

The accident occurred around 2:17 am on December 20, when Train No. 20507, the Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express, collided with a herd of elephants on the Jamunamukh–Kampur stretch of the Lumding Division under the Northeast Frontier Railway. The collision caused the locomotive and five coaches to derail. The site is located approximately 126 km from Guwahati. Seven elephants were killed and one was injured.

The derailment caused severe disruption to rail services in Assam. Several trains scheduled for December 20 were cancelled, short-terminated, short-originated, or regulated to ensure passenger safety and facilitate track restoration.

The Northeast Frontier Railway’s General Manager and senior officials rushed to the site to oversee restoration work, which is currently underway.
