Assam Congress Chief Gaurav Gogoi May Contest From Jorhat Assembly Constituency!

Guwahati: As the political environment in Assam warms up, it has now been reported that Assam Congress chief and MP Gaurav Gogoi may possibly contest the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections from the Jorhat constituency.

A source from the party said that a Congress Central Election Committee meeting took place last evening, which finalised candidates for approximately 40 seats.

However, the party said that it would release the first candidate list as soon as the Election Commission of India officially announces the poll dates.

It may be mentioned that Gaurav Gogoi currently represents the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat and is the Deputy Leader of the Opposition at the Lok Sabha.

Gogoi had recently confirmed that talks with several potential allies are nearing completion, with only formal public announcements pending.

However, reports claimed that the negotiations with Raijor Dal are still ongoing, with seat-sharing equations still being in question.

During a recent visit to Delhi, the Congress central leadership sought detailed inputs from the state unit on prospective alliances.

Gogoi had claimed that the high command (Central Congress leadership) would provide further guidance in the coming days. Reports on concluded discussions with other parties have been submitted, while the status of talks with Raijor Dal has already been communicated to the leadership.

The Assam Assembly elections are expected to take place in March–April 2026, with the current term of the 126-member House ending in May 2026.

On February 17, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, held a comprehensive review in Guwahati to assess poll preparedness. During their two-day visit, the Election Commission met representatives from recognised national and state political parties to gather suggestions on ensuring smooth and transparent conduct of the elections.
