Assam: Youth Congress Leader Booked in ₹1.5 Lakh Dishonoured Cheque Case in Nagaon

Nagaon: The President of the Nagaon District Youth Congress has been named in an FIR alleging cheating and criminal breach of trust in connection with a ₹1.5 lakh cheque dishonour case, police said on Saturday.

The case has been registered at the Nagaon Sadar Police Station following a complaint filed by Jalal Uddin, a resident of Chenimari Beel under Juria Police Station in Nagaon district.

In his complaint, Jalal Uddin alleged that Azahar Ali Ahmed of Kachuagaon — currently residing at Islampatti, Ward No. 23, Nagaon — had borrowed ₹1,50,000 from him citing urgent financial requirements.

According to the FIR, the accused issued a cheque dated August 26, 2024, drawn on Axis Bank’s Nagaon branch towards repayment of the loan. However, when the cheque was presented for clearance, it was reportedly dishonoured due to insufficient funds — a situation commonly referred to as a “cheque bounce”.

The complainant further alleged that after being informed of the dishonour, the accused requested him not to initiate legal proceedings and assured that the amount would be repaid in cash. Despite repeated assurances, the dues allegedly remain unpaid.

The situation reportedly escalated when the complainant again approached the accused seeking repayment. The FIR states that the accused allegedly responded with verbal abuse and threats instead of settling the matter.

Azahar Ali Ahmed is known to be closely associated with senior Congress leader Rakibul Hussain. However, neither the accused nor the Youth Congress has issued any official statement regarding the allegations so far.

Police officials said the matter will be examined in accordance with legal provisions. Further investigation is underway.
