Assam: Imam Saves Seven Hindu Lives Using Mosque Loudspeaker After Midnight Accident in Sribhumi

In a heartwarming display of humanity that cut across religious lines, a local imam is being hailed as a hero for saving the lives of seven Hindu passengers whose vehicle plunged into a roadside pond late at night in Sribhumi, Assam.

The incident took place around midnight in the Bahadurpur area of Neelam Bazar, Sribhumi, when a van carrying seven passengers skidded off the road and fell into deep water.

Trapped inside the rapidly sinking vehicle, the passengers were struggling to stay afloat and crying for help.

Maulana Abdul Basit, the imam of the nearby mosque, was inside the mosque when he heard the loud crash. Without a moment’s hesitation, he rushed to the public address system and announced over the loudspeaker: “An auto has fallen into the pond! Everyone, please come quickly to rescue the passengers!”

The urgent call woke up the entire village. Dozens of residents, many still in nightclothes, ran to the spot with torches and ropes. Working together, they managed to pull out all seven passengers before the vehicle sank completely. None sustained serious injuries.

Local residents described the imam’s swift action as the difference between life and death. “It was pitch dark and cold. If Maulana Sahab had not alerted us through the mike, those people would surely have drowned,” said a villager who took part in the rescue.

The rescued passengers and their families have personally visited the mosque to thank Maulana Abdul Basit. Social media is flooded with praise, with many calling it a shining example of communal harmony and the triumph of humanity over religious divides.

Police are probing the cause of the accident, suspecting poor visibility and slippery roads after recent rain. Meanwhile, the story of the imam who turned a mosque's loudspeaker into a lifeline continues to inspire the entire region.
