The accused has been identified as Rupjyoti Das, who is believed to be the mastermind behind the long-running scam.

The accused allegedly operated a fraudulent rental business and subsequently engaged in the illegal sale of vehicles across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Posing as a senior official of HSBC Bank, Rupjyoti Das allegedly deceived vehicle owners by claiming he was renting cars on behalf of the bank for official use. According to police sources, the scam, which has been ongoing since 2023, operated in various parts of Assam, including Guwahati, and targeted numerous car owners.

The sources estimate that more than 150 vehicles were fraudulently sold through this modus operandi, with over 50 alone disposed of in Arunachal Pradesh.

Following an investigation, Hatigaon Police apprehended Rupjyoti Das.

So far, the team has recovered 12 vehicles in Assam. Additionally, two more vehicles have been identified in Arunachal Pradesh. Police said that they are working to seize them shortly.
