Assam: Northeast’s First National Data Centre Inaugurated at Amingaon

Guwahati: Amingaon in Assam has marked a major milestone in digital infrastructure with the inauguration of the Northeast’s first National Data Centre. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the facility, established under the aegis of the National Informatics Centre (NIC).

The Amingaon facility is the fifth National Data Centre in India. Existing centres are located in New Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, and Bhubaneswar. Built at a cost of approximately Rs 348.66 crore, the new centre is expected to significantly strengthen digital governance and data management capabilities across the northeastern region.

Equipped with advanced technologies, the data centre has been designed with a strong focus on cybersecurity. Officials stated that it will employ high-end systems to guard against cyber threats, ensuring secure storage and processing of critical government data. All data storage servers will be monitored round the clock under a 24×7 surveillance mechanism.

The facility also features high-speed network connectivity and incorporates Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled systems to enhance operational efficiency and reliability. It is expected to support a wide range of e-governance services and digital initiatives in the region.

The project is also set to create employment opportunities, with both technical and non-technical posts to be filled. Students with specialised skills from institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati and Assam ITA are likely to receive preference in recruitment.

Notably, the centre will be headed by an Assamese woman officer. The foundation stone for the project was laid in 2020, and its completion now signals a new chapter in Amingaon’s development as an emerging digital hub in the Northeast.
