The calf was first spotted around 4:00 PM on January 21, 2026. A swift and comprehensive search was immediately launched under the leadership of the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Eastern Assam Wildlife Division (EAWL), to locate the mother rhino and facilitate reunification.

The multi-agency effort involved departmental elephants, thermal imaging drones, and frontline forest staff conducting an extensive sweep of the terrain over more than 24 hours. Meanwhile, a specialised veterinary team, including Dr Bhaskar Choudhury, Dr Mohit Nyol, and Dr Saurobh Borgohain, remained on standby near the calf, providing constant monitoring and supportive care to keep it stable and safe.

Despite relentless efforts, the mother could not be located, making reunification impossible. Prioritising the calf’s long-term welfare and security, officials decided to proceed with a formal rescue.

The young rhino was safely rescued at approximately 4:00 PM on January 22 and transported to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) at Borjuli, where it will receive expert treatment, nourishment, and rehabilitation under the joint management of the Assam Forest Department and the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI).
