SILCHAR: An alleged gang rape incident has been reported from the Chengkuri Bypass area in Assam's Silchar, where a young woman has accused a group of men of assaulting her in front of her fiancé.

One accused, identified as Nilotpal Das, has been arrested by police, while the investigation is ongoing.

According to the victim’s complaint, the incident occurred last Thursday night at around 8 PM. The woman and her fiancé had gone for a drive and were talking inside their parked car on the Silchar Chengkuri Bypass when a group of miscreants arrived at the spot in a Thar vehicle. The group reportedly attacked the couple soon after arriving.

The victim alleged that her fiancé was dragged away and restrained at some distance, after which the men sexually assaulted her one by one in his presence. She further stated that the attackers threatened to kill her if she tried to resist, took away her mobile phone, and looted ₹10,000 in cash before fleeing.

Following the incident, the victim lodged a complaint at Silchar Sadar Police Station. She reportedly identified one of the accused as Nilotpal Das, a resident of the Ashram Road area in Silchar. Police have arrested him and are questioning him, while efforts are being made to trace the remaining accused.

The incident took place at a time when Cachar police were on high alert due to the district visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Cachar's Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das said that one accused has been arrested and the investigation is continuing. He added that police are searching for the remaining suspects and examining all aspects of the case. He also stated that it is yet to be confirmed whether it is a case of gang rape or if there are other factors involved, and clarity will come after the medical report is received. He urged the public not to believe unverified information.

Meanwhile, speaking to the media, Additional SP (Crime), Cachar, Rajat Kumar Pal, said:

“On February 19, an alleged rape incident was reported to us near the Silchar bypass, where the victim claimed that she was allegedly raped after being stopped by some miscreants at night. The miscreants also extorted ₹10,000 in cash from her possession. A case has been registered based on her complaint, Case No. 177/2026, under Sections 308(5), 310(2), 351(2), 61(2), 70(1), 76 and 79 of the BNS. One of the suspected accused has been arrested. As per the complaint, the miscreants arrived in a car, and we are trying to trace the vehicle along with the other accused who are absconding. The total number of accused is suspected to be around seven to eight as per the FIR. The victim’s medical examination has been conducted, and we are awaiting the reports.”

Police said the investigation is ongoing and the final conclusion will depend on the medical report and further evidence.
