Assam: Woman Found Dead Eight Years After Marriage; Family Alleges Marital Discord

CACHAR: An incident has been reported from Natanpur village in Katigorah, under Assam’s Cachar district, where a married woman allegedly died by suicide following claims of mental and physical harassment linked to her husband’s alleged extramarital relationship.

According to allegations made by her family members at Suprakandi in Sribhumi district, Assam, the woman had been under distress after learning that her husband, Kripan Namashudra, was allegedly involved in a long-standing illicit relationship with another woman.

Speaking to the media, the victim’s paternal uncle said,

“It has been eight years since my niece got married to Kripan, and everything was fine till yesterday when we learned that she had allegedly committed suicide. We have come to know that Kripan was involved in an extramarital affair and used to assault my niece after she confronted him about it.”

He further added,

“Yesterday, we had invited them to attend a marriage ceremony in the family when suddenly we received information that she had committed suicide. Locals in the area have claimed that she had been assaulted badly several times. A mark was also reportedly seen on her neck, which raises suspicion that she may have been choked, and later the incident might have been portrayed as a suicide.”

The family alleged that repeated harassment pushed her to take the extreme step. They have made a demand for complete investigation into the events which led to her death.

Following a complaint lodged by the deceased’s family at Gumrah Police Outpost, a case was registered against the husband. Acting on the complaint, police conducted an operation and apprehended Kripan Namashudra.

The accused is currently in police custody, and further interrogation is underway as part of the investigation.

Police officials have not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the exact circumstances surrounding the death. Further legal proceedings are expected based on the outcome of the investigation.
