Guwahati: Former DC’s Son Among Six Arrested After Violent Ganeshguri Brawl

GUWAHATI: Guwahati’s Ganeshguri area descended into late-night chaos this past Friday as a violent brawl erupted between two groups under the flyover, leaving at least one young man with severe injuries.

The incident, which reportedly took place around midnight, has led to the arrest of seven individuals, including the son of a retired high-ranking government official. The confrontation began when a youth identified as DK Basumatary arrived at a local eatery near the Ganeshguri flyover with a friend for dinner. 

According to eyewitness accounts, a three-member group already present at the scene was engaged in a heated argument with the shopkeeper. The situation took a turn for the worse when the trio allegedly shoved Basumatary’s friend without provocation after finishing their meal.

As the argument escalated, the group of three reportedly made several phone calls to summon reinforcements. Within minutes, a larger group of youths arrived at the spot in luxury cars and motorcycles, including Royal Enfield bikes. The mob then launched a brutal assault on Basumatary and his companion.

The victim, DK Basumatary, sustained severe head injuries during the attack. In a chilling detail mentioned in the police complaint, it is alleged that the attackers did not just use physical force but used the magazine of a pistol to strike Basumatary on the head at least four times, causing deep gashes.

Following the incident, an FIR was promptly lodged at the Dispur Police Station. Acting on the complaint, the Dispur Police conducted a late-night operation and apprehended six individuals. 

The arrested persons have been identified as Badik Modi, Washim Akhtar, Diganta Haloi, Amit Bhowmik, Jitu Barman, Tanish Sharma and Jyotishman Bora.

Sensational details have emerged regarding the primary accused, Badik Modi, who is reportedly the son of retired District Commissioner (DC) Bibhash Modi. 
Investigations suggest that the entire altercation was instigated by Modi. 

Dispur Police are currently interrogating the accused to ascertain the involvement of illegal firearms and to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the daylight-style lawlessness in the heart of the city.
