Crime Branch Arrests Sikha Sarma; She Is Remanded to Two-Day Custody

GUWAHATI: Controversial social media personality Shikha Sarma was arrested by the Assam Police Crime Branch from Nilachal Apartment in Guwahati’s Patharquarry area and has been remanded to two days of police custody after being produced before a court.

As per reports, after being produced in court, Sarma was taken to the Panbazar Women Police Station, where she will be kept for the night. She is expected to remain there throughout her custody period. Witnesses said she left the Crime Branch premises smiling and greeting onlookers, showing no visible remorse.

The arrest follows an FIR lodged by Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, at the Crime Branch, accusing Sarma of posting offensive content, character assassination, and spreading misinformation targeting the artist and his family members. Based on the complaint, a case was registered under Sections 152, 196, 299, 351, 352, 353, and 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

In addition, the Zubeen Garg Fan Club also filed a separate complaint against Sarma at Dispur Police Station, citing repeated defamatory social media posts against the singer.

Police sources informed that Sarma had made a series of controversial posts on Facebook, claiming that the five accused individuals linked to Zubeen Garg’s mysterious death case were innocent. She allegedly went on to post multiple comments targeting the character of Zubeen Garg, his wife Garima Saikia Garg, his sister Palmee Borthakur, and even criticised his father, Kapil Borthakur.

Following public outrage and strong reactions on social media, Sarma reportedly deleted several Facebook posts related to Zubeen Garg prior to her arrest. Reports also said that Sarma showed no sign of remorse, leaving the Crime Branch premises smiling and greeting people before being taken away by officials.

The case sparked widespread condemnation across Assam, with fans and members of the public accusing Sarma of spreading hate speech, misinformation, and attempting to tarnish the reputation of one of the state’s most respected cultural icon.

Further investigation in the matter is currently underway.
