CRPF Deployed Outside Shyamkanu Mahanta’s Residence Amid Probe into Zubeen Garg’s Death

Robust security measures have been implemented around the home of Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organiser of the North East India Festival, in Guwahati’s Geetanagar area.

Since early morning, a significant deployment of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel has been stationed near Mahanta’s residence to prevent any potential disturbances.

The heightened security follows protests that erupted outside a news channel's office on Wednesday during a press conference. The demonstrations involved groups such as Bir Lachit Sena and AJYCP, escalating tensions in the area.

Reports have indicated that Mahanta faces the possibility of imminent arrest. On Wednesday night, several news outlets reported speculations about his potential detention. All cases related to Mahanta have been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and, under the directive of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising senior officials has been constituted to conduct a thorough investigation.

Some reports also claimed that Mahanta will be interrogated about the events leading to the death of Zubeen Garg. In another move, the Assam government has banned Mahanta and his associated organisation from operating in the state, prohibiting any form of financial support, advertisements, or sponsorships.

Chief Minister Sarma emphasised that the government’s actions align with public sentiment, highlighting Mahanta’s alleged negligence as a critical factor in the tragic demise of Zubeen Garg.
