Ex-Assam DGP's son, Aranyak Saikia Appointed DC of Karbi Anglong

In a bureaucratic reshuffle, the Assam government has appointed 2020-batch IAS officer Aranyak Saikia as the new District Commissioner of Karbi Anglong, as per an official notification released on December 24.

Saikia, who was earlier posted as Staff Officer to the Chief Secretary of Assam, is the son of retired IPS officer and former Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia.

Kuladhar Saikia held the top police post in the state in 2019 and was honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2015 for his collection of short stories. He has also served as president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, Assam's apex literary body.

The reposting came amid a widespread law & order situation in West Karbi Anglong over the demand of eviction of certain communities from VGR and PGR reserves in Kheroni.

The demands led to clashes, leading to a series of arson and at least two deaths.

Huge forces of police were deployed in the areas to control the situation, and the internet was also shut for at least two days.

As of Wednesday, reports suggest that there are no new instances of violence in the region.
