Assam: Flautist Dipak Sarma's remains reach Guwahati, last rites scheduled today

Guwahati: The body of renowned flautist Dipak Sarma, who died in Chennai on Monday morning, was flown back to Guwahati, Assam, on Tuesday via a special chartered flight.

Guwahati: The body of renowned flautist Dipak Sarma, who died in Chennai on Monday morning, was flown back to Guwahati, Assam, on Tuesday via a special chartered flight.

Sources said the flight left Chennai around 5 AM and landed in Guwahati soon after. The mortal remains were then transported straight to his home in Ambikagiri Nagar.

Once family rituals are completed, the body will be moved to Seuj Sangha between 10 AM and 2 PM, allowing admirers, cultural groups, and supporters to offer their final tributes.

The cremation will follow at the Navagraha crematorium.

Sarma, 57, breathed his last at 6:15 AM on Monday in a Chennai hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for weeks due to a rare liver condition. He was initially hospitalised in Guwahati before being airlifted to Chennai for specialised care.

Born in Panigaon village of Nalbari district, Dipak Sarma grew up surrounded by the rhythms and melodies of rural Assam — influences that shaped his unique musical identity.

Over the years, he carved a niche for himself as one of Assam’s most revered flautists, earning widespread recognition for his magical command over the instrument and his ability to infuse deep emotion into every note.
