Guwahati Police Crack Hidden Camera Case at TISS Hostel; Mastermind Arrested

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Police on Wednesday said they had cracked the hidden camera case involving the recovery of a concealed device from the bathroom of a girls’ hostel at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) campus near Assam Engineering College in Jalukbari.

The incident first came to light on February 25, 2026, after a hidden camera was discovered inside the hostel bathroom, triggering widespread concern among students and the management.

Police have arrested the alleged mastermind, identified as Mridupawan Bora, a resident of Simaluguri in Sivasagar district. He was apprehended from Kaliabor while travelling from Guwahati towards Sivasagar and is currently in custody.

According to investigators, Bora allegedly hatched the conspiracy and executed the plan with the involvement of his girlfriend, a student of TISS. In early February, he is said to have supplied the hidden camera to her, concealing the device inside a soap case. The camera was reportedly fitted with a microprocessor and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The matter surfaced after the student was questioned by police officials, which led to the unravelling of the operation.

Speaking to the media, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Guwahati, said the accused appeared to have a “psychological intention” behind committing such acts.

“The accused had a psychological intention to commit such activities. We have information suggesting that he was previously involved in similar acts outside Guwahati as well,” the DCP said.

Explaining the technical functioning of the device, he added:

“The hidden camera installed inside the bathroom had a microprocessor within it. The processor operated with Wi-Fi, which was used by the girl. Once she switched on the Wi-Fi, the camera would automatically connect. We found only one spot inside the bathroom where the camera had been fitted.”

The officer stated that the arrests were made only after collecting sufficient evidence. Technical assistance was sought from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-Guwahati) during the investigation.

“We have sought technical help from IIT-Guwahati in this case. As of now, we have found no one else apart from the duo directly involved,” the DCP said.

While the exact motive remains under investigation, police suspect that the recordings may have been intended for upload to online pornographic websites.

Further investigation is underway, and more details are expected as interrogation continues.
