Nestled in the scenic Sandhyachal hills on Guwahati’s outskirts, Basistha Temple holds profound historical significance. It was built in the late 18th century by Ahom king Raja Rajeshwar Singha. Legend associates it with Sage Basistha, the guru of Lord Rama, making it a key pilgrimage center in Northeast India. The temple’s decision to light precisely 1,11,111 diyas, a number chosen for its spiritual symbolism that underscores the deep cultural ties between Assam and the national Ram Mandir movement.

Elaborating about this year’s celebration, Sonu Pratap Sharma, one of the organisers, while talking to DY365, said, “Preparations are underway for the grand celebration of the 2nd anniversary of the Ram Mandir Pran Pratistha Ceremony. We have received the required. The evening will be set for vibrant rangoli competitions, bhajans, and recitations of Ram Raksha Stotra, drawing families and youth alike. Volunteers, many from the Basistha locality, are meticulously arranging the diyas, ensuring the temple grounds shimmer under the glow.”

“This is our way of honouring Ram Lalla’s pran pratishtha; the light of these diyas reflects the light in our hearts,” shared Sharma.

This spectacle highlights Assam’s enthusiastic embrace of the Ram Mandir legacy, fostering inter-community harmony amid regional cultural festivities. As the Northeast continues to integrate national spiritual milestones with local traditions, such events reinforce cultural pride.
