Ink Attack Plot on Gaurav Gogoi? Assam Police Begin Inquiry

GUWAHATI: Assam Police have launched an inquiry following allegations of a conspiracy to splash an ink-like substance on Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi during a party rally and subsequently blame the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the incident.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that a Congress-linked organisation, Inclusive Minds, was involved in planning the act. According to the Chief Minister, the alleged plan was to create an incident during the rally and then accuse the BJP of orchestrating it.

Addressing a press conference today, Chief Minister Sarma said a Congress whistleblower had informed that three individuals, including a woman, were involved in the alleged plan in Guwahati. He said police were asked to summon them as a preventive measure.

“They had connived that they will throw ink on Gaurav Gogoi and then shift the blame to the BJP. We summoned them to ensure that if anything such happens, the responsibility will be on them. This is a preventive measure; we are not treating this as a case unless a crime is committed,” Sarma said.

He further claimed that Saksham Marwa, associated with Inclusive Minds, was attempting to create a political narrative in Assam.

The issue surfaced after Gogoi’s press conference on Monday, where he responded to the Chief Minister’s allegations regarding his alleged links to Pakistan. The Chief Minister later stated that the whistleblower had alerted the BJP about the alleged plan.

Following the disclosure, a complaint was filed by Munindra Pathak at Dispur Police Station. Police have summoned Adrita Das, Sunil Kanugule, Saksham Marwa, and Suraj Pathak for questioning. Adrita Das and Suraj Pathak from Assam have already appeared before police for interrogation.

The Chief Minister termed the alleged plan a serious conspiracy and called for a detailed investigation.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders have rejected the allegations, calling them politically motivated. Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, party media cell member Bedabrat Bora, and Assam Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur accused the BJP of fabricating the controversy. The leaders visited Dispur Police Station and reiterated their denial before the media.

Congress leaders also dismissed the Chief Minister’s claim that Gaurav Gogoi had insulted journalists after the press conference.

Police said the inquiry is ongoing and further questioning is underway. Officials stated that more details would emerge as the investigation progresses.
