Man shouts "Jai Zubeen Da" before jumping into Brahmaputra River from Saraighat Bridge

A startling event unfolded at Jalukbari’s Saraighat Bridge when a man leapt into the Brahmaputra River, reportedly shouting “Jai Zubeen Da” in honour of the late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

The incident occurred on the historic bridge, leaving witnesses stunned and prompting an immediate response from river police, who initiated a search and rescue mission. Despite their efforts, the individual remains unlocated as of this report.

This incident follows the recent tragic loss of Partha Barkataki, a dedicated young admirer of Zubeen Garg, whose death on Tuesday has plunged the locals. Partha, the sole offspring of the late Jiten Barkataki from Gohpur and retired educator Hira Hazarika, had relocated to Guwahati after earning his BCA degree in Bengaluru and had established a car dealership in the city.

During his time in Guwahati, Partha forged a deep personal bond with Zubeen Garg, frequently visiting the singer’s home and nurturing a close relationship with his family. His profound respect for the artist was evident, and Zubeen’s sudden death left him devastated.

On the day Zubeen’s body was brought back to Guwahati, Partha paid his respects with floral offerings. Subsequently, he began fasting at home in solitary grief. On September 21, he attended a memorial event for Zubeen at Purupbari, where he was overcome with emotion.

Neighbours noted that Partha was missing from Monday and was found deceased on Tuesday, around 5 PM.
