"Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma turned 57 on Sunday, with large crowds gathering in the state capital Dispur from midnight to extend birthday greetings, creating a festive and crowded atmosphere in the area.Advertisment From party workers to supporters, people from different parts of the state thronged Dispur to greet the Chief Minister, many eager to catch a glimpse of him or take a selfie. The celebrations began shortly after midnight, with the capital witnessing an overwhelming public presence. Despite the massive turnout, the Chief Minister did not cut a cake publicly this year. Supporters presented CM Sarma with traditional Assamese gamusas, flower bouquets, a Ganesh idol, and other gifts. Notably, a youth from Duliajan presented him with a statue of Chilarai as a birthday gift. Addressing the media, the Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the people and reiterated his political resolve ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. “I am thankful to all the people who have come here to wish me on my birthday. My aim is to make BJP successful in the election so that we can form the government for the third consecutive time,” CM Sarma said. Speaking about his long-term political focus, and responding to questions about public hopes of seeing him as the Prime Minister, he said: “If I were to become the Prime Minister or the Home Minister, I would have to work for the entire country. However, I believe Assam still needs focused attention for another five years, as there is a lot of development work left to be done. There are many capable leaders at the national level, but for me, Assam remains the priority,” he said. The Chief Minister also shared details about his demanding routine and limited sleep. “I generally sleep for 1.5 to 2 hours. Sometimes I take short naps in flights, cars or helicopters. On normal days, my sleep is about five to five-and-a-half hours, but since last August, I have slept a maximum of two hours a day,” he said. On his daily habits, CM Sarma said he has no particular preference for food and does not eat much. He added that he enjoys long drives within Guwahati and occasionally to nearby areas, especially when his daughter visits the city. Outlining his schedule for the day, the Chief Minister said he would begin his birthday by seeking blessings at the Kamakhya Temple early in the morning. “I will begin the day with a visit to the Kamakhya Temple in the early morning. Later, I will travel to Darrang to attend Bir Chilarai Divas, proceed to West Goalpara, and in the evening participate in programmes at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH),” he said. Responding to questions about public aspirations to see him in a national leadership role, CM Sarma remarked: “There are many capable leaders in the country to take care of national responsibilities. Assam still needs focused leadership.
