No Casualties, No Property Loss in Assam After Monday Morning Earthquake

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake that struck Assam early Monday caused no major damage to life or property across the state, with only one minor injury reported so far, according to preliminary assessments by Assam State Disaster Management (ASDMA).

Officials said all districts have reported nil damage in terms of deaths, serious injuries and structural losses. One injury was officially reported from Morigaon district, where an 80-year-old woman, Joymoti Dewri, sustained a head injury while rushing out of her house during the tremor. She was immediately shifted to Morigaon STHG Civil Hospital for treatment, and her condition is stated to be stable. No damage to houses, roads or public infrastructure has been reported from the epicentral district or elsewhere in the state till the latest update.

However, while the ASDMA initially confirmed only one injury at the time of the incident, sources told DY365 that another person, identified as Niraj Kumar from Morigaon town, also sustained a forehead injury during the earthquake in the morning hours.

Although the quake was felt across several parts of Assam, triggering brief panic among residents, particularly in the early morning hours, district administrations confirmed that there was no significant impact. The State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), compiling inputs from all District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) till 10:00 AM, reported nil damage across all districts.

The ASDMA authorities have stated that the current assessment is preliminary and that detailed reports are still awaited from district administrations.

Meanwhile, officials have advised residents to remain cautious and follow official advisories, even as the situation remains under control.

Amid the panic triggered by the early morning earthquake in Assam, a nurse displayed remarkable presence of mind and courage by saving the life of a newborn during the tremor.

The incident took place at a healthcare facility when the earthquake struck in the early hours, causing panic among patients and staff. While many rushed to safer areas, the nurse ensured the safety of a newborn baby, shielding the infant and preventing any harm during the quake.

Sources said the timely action of the nurse helped avert a possible tragedy, and both the newborn and the nurse are safe. The incident has drawn appreciation from hospital management and the public, highlighting the role of frontline healthcare workers in times of crisis.
