An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Assam in the early hours of Monday, triggering panic across large parts of the state.

The tremor was felt at 4:17:40 am IST, waking residents from sleep and forcing many to rush out of their homes.

According to preliminary data, the epicentre was located near Morigaon district, at a depth of approximately 50 kilometres. The coordinates of the earthquake were 26.37° North latitude and 92.29° East longitude.

The tremor was felt across almost all districts of Assam, including Guwahati, Morigaon, Nagaon, Kampur, Tezpur, Rangapara, Jamugurihat, Kaliabor, Balipara, Rangia, Dhekiajuli, Biswanath, Juria, Doboka, Kharupetia, Narayanpur, Kaziranga, Udalguri, Kalaigaon and Dimakuchi, among others. Reports also confirmed strong tremors in Kaziranga National Park and surrounding areas.

Eyewitnesses said the shaking was strong enough to cause household items to rattle, creating a brief situation of panic, with residents stepping outdoors for safety. However, no casualties or major damage have been reported so far from anywhere in the northeastern region.

The district disaster management authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged people to remain calm. No reports of aftershocks have been confirmed at the time of filing this report.
