Debajit Sharma, a resident of Hatbor, Barigaon in Kaliabor, returned to his roots after completing his higher education and established a modern, scientific goat farming unit that has now emerged as a model venture in the region. An MBA graduate who studied in Delhi after completing his master’s degree from Gauhati University, Debajit chose to leave urban opportunities behind to pursue his childhood passion for animal husbandry—particularly goat rearing.

“After completing my master’s degree from Gauhati University, I moved to Delhi for higher studies and also started earning there. However, since childhood I had a deep affection for animals, especially goats. That is when I decided to return to Assam and start something of my own in this sector,” Debajit said.

What began as a small initiative with local goat breeds has today grown into a scientifically managed farm housing nearly 80 high-quality goats sourced from South Africa, Australia, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. The farm includes improved breeds such as Beetal goats from Punjab and African Boer goats, enabling higher productivity and better returns.

“Initially, I started with local goat breeds from Assam. But over time, I realised that for better development in this sector, I needed to introduce improved breeds. That’s when I expanded my farm with Beetal and African Boer goats. At present, I have around 75 to 80 goats in my farm,” he added.

Beyond personal success, Debajit’s initiative has created a ripple effect across the region. His farm has become a training hub for students and aspiring farmers, with trainees regularly visiting from neighbouring states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur to learn advanced and scientific goat farming techniques.

Through this venture, Debajit earns an average monthly income of around ₹1 lakh and has also generated employment opportunities for several local youths. His contribution to the agricultural sector has earned him wide recognition, including the prestigious “Model Farmer” award from the Assam government.

Encouraging unemployed youths to look towards agriculture, Debajit believes the sector holds immense potential. “Young people can build a secure future in this business. With proper training, scientific management, and dedication, goat farming can provide a good livelihood,” he said.

Today, Debajit Sharma stands as a powerful symbol of positive change—proving that with education, innovation, and commitment, rural entrepreneurship can transform lives and inspire a new generation to rediscover opportunities at home.
