Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, informed the media on Tuesday that the delegation has sought an appointment with the Governor at 4 PM. He alleged that the state government had failed to maintain law and order, resulting in the death of two persons in Kheroni and injuries to several others.

Saikia said the opposition would demand compensation, as per government norms, for the families of those killed and injured in the violence. The memorandum will also seek a detailed inquiry into the incidents, assessment of losses, and relief measures for affected residents.

The joint delegation includes Congress MLAs Shivamani Bora, Bhaskar Baruah, Diganta Barman, Wajed Ali Choudhury, Nurul Huda, Rashid Mandal, Rakibuddin Ahmed and Pradip Sarkar; CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar; Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi; senior AJP leader Jagadish Bhuyan; senior Congress leaders Pradyut Bhuyan, Ghana Chetia, Nasir Khan, Raman Jha and Suman Kalyan Bora; West Karbi Anglong District Congress president Augustine Inghi; senior Congress spokesperson Rupak Das; Cherisma Rongpipi; Raijor Dal leader Russell Hussain; and CPI(ML) leader Bibek Das.

Following their visit to the affected areas, the opposition parties alleged that the violence was the result of a political conspiracy. They accused the ruling dispensation of pursuing a “divide and rule” policy by fostering divisions between hill and plain regions and among different communities and tribes for electoral gains.

Speaking to reporters, members of the delegation also criticised the BJP for demanding President’s Rule over relatively minor incidents in West Bengal, while allegedly failing to take concrete action despite violence in Assam. They claimed that the state government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council had failed to effectively handle the situation.

Saikia further alleged that widespread irregularities and corruption involving the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Tuliram Ronghang, had contributed to an atmosphere of anarchy in the district. He said issues related to PGR–VGR land must be examined thoroughly during eviction drives.

The Leader of the Opposition also stated that the arson incident at Ronghang’s residence and the subsequent demolition of the house by members of Ronghang’s family using bulldozers should be included within the scope of any comprehensive investigation.
