The state-wide signature campaign, launched as part of the Congress party’s nationwide movement against alleged electoral malpractice by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), received massive public response. All 35 District Congress Committees across Assam participated in the drive, which was conducted at the grassroots level — from districts and blocks to mandals and polling booths. Among the districts, Nagaon Congress Committee collected the highest number of signatures, exceeding three lakh.

APCC administrative general secretary Pradyut Bhuyan informed that the final verification and compilation of signatures were completed at Rajiv Bhavan, the party’s state headquarters in Guwahati, before being sent to the AICC headquarters.

Addressing the gathering at Rajiv Bhavan, Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia accused the BJP of forming governments in several states through what he termed “vote theft.” “The BJP came to power in states like Karnataka and Haryana by manipulating the mandate,” Saikia alleged, adding that the Congress party launched the ‘Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod’ campaign to make people aware of such undemocratic practices.

“The BJP continues to use unethical tactics to erode the Congress vote base,” Saikia said. “Through this signature drive, we want to remind citizens of the need to protect democracy from manipulation and deceit.”

The event also saw the presence of MLA Diganta Barman and Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Barthakur, along with several senior Congress leaders and workers.
