Speaking to the media, Atul Borah said the Prime Minister showed keen interest in understanding the history of the Assam Movement and the sacrifices made by the martyrs. He added that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma personally briefed the Prime Minister on the background of the movement and the events that shaped Assam’s history.

“The Prime Minister tried to learn in detail about the Assam Movement and the martyrs who laid down their lives. With his visit to the Shaheed Smarak Kshetra, people across the country and the world will now come to know about Assam’s historic struggle,” Atul Borah said.

The Shaheed Smarak Kshetra, spread across 116 bighas of land, stands nearly 225 feet tall and has emerged as a major heritage and tourism landmark in Guwahati since its inauguration on December 10. The memorial complex houses statues of all the martyrs, a dedicated meditation space, and visual galleries featuring photographs and newspaper reports from the period of the Assam Movement, informed the minister.

He also mentioned that to enhance visitors’ understanding, a laser show is held every evening, narrating how the movement began, evolved, and later turned volatile, based on documented historical facts. The complex also includes a 500-seat auditorium, cycling tracks, and a food court, making it a unique cultural destination in the city.

“The Prime Minister’s visit has further elevated the significance of the Shaheed Smarak Kshetra, positioning it as a must-visit site for tourists and history enthusiasts. It will also ensure that the sacrifices of Assam’s martyrs remain firmly etched in the national memory,” added Borah.
