Series of Road Accidents Across Assam Amid Dense Fog; Several Injured, One Killed

A series of road accidents were reported from multiple districts across Assam on Wednesday, largely attributed to dense fog and poor visibility, leaving several people injured and one person dead, while causing major traffic disruptions on national highways.

Doboka Accident: Five Injured, One Critical

At least five people were seriously injured in a major road accident that occurred early morning on National Highway near Jabrakhuwa, Doboka, in Hojai district.

According to sources, a Bolero pickup vehicle (AS12 CC 6362) lost control and overturned on the highway due to dense fog. The vehicle was travelling from Rupahi towards Doboka when the accident occurred at around 6:30 am.

Out of the seven occupants, five sustained injuries, with one reported to be in critical condition. Local residents rushed the injured to Doboka Life Care Hospital, while the critically injured person was later referred to Nagaon Medical College for advanced treatment. Two occupants escaped unhurt.

Doboka police reached the spot promptly, initiated an investigation, and restored traffic movement on the highway.

Mariani: MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi’s Vehicle Meets Accident

In another incident, Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi’s speeding Thar vehicle met with an accident in the early hours on the Jorhat–Mariani road at Pukhuria after colliding with a herd of domestic cattle.

The front portion of the vehicle was badly damaged. However, MLA Kurmi and his two security personnel escaped unhurt. The accident was reportedly caused due to poor visibility from dense fog.

Balipara: One Killed in Hit-and-Run Case

A fatal hit-and-run incident was reported from Balipara in Sonitpur district, where Lakshman Barman was killed on the spot after being hit by a Pulsar motorcycle (AS12 AG 2869).

The motorcycle rider initially fled the scene, but was later apprehended by Chariduar police, who also seized the motorcycle.

Gohpur: Truck Collision Disrupts Highway Traffic

In Gohpur, two trucks collided at Gauri Gate on National Highway due to dense fog. One truck rammed into another that was stationary on the road.

The accident led to traffic congestion, and one truck driver sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to Gohpur hospital for treatment. The vehicles involved bore registration numbers AS26 AC 0483 and AS13 AC 6012.

Katigorah: Passenger Auto Overturns After Being Hit

In Katigorah, Cachar district, a passenger auto overturned late at night near Katigorah Chourangi on National Highway-6 after being hit by an unidentified vehicle that fled the scene.

The auto driver and two passengers were injured and were admitted to Katigorah Model Hospital by local residents.

Lanka: Bike Dragged Half a Kilometre by Truck, Catches Fire

A dramatic incident occurred at Lanka near the No. 1 Railway Gate, where a truck dragged a motorcycle for nearly half a kilometre after a collision.

The biker, identified as Binoy Palit, narrowly escaped death. Due to friction, the motorcycle caught fire, creating panic on the roadway. Locals managed to extinguish the flames, but the bike was partially burnt and severely damaged.

The truck involved (AS01 FC 0799) fled the scene, while the damaged motorcycle (AS31 1596) was seized. Lanka police reached the spot, controlled the situation, and initiated further action.

It may be mentioned that state police and transport officials have been urging motorists to exercise extreme caution during early morning and late-night hours amid the prevailing winter conditions, particularly dense fog, to prevent further accidents.
