The incident came to light after a significant consignment of smuggled liquor obtained from Naharlagun, Papum Pare in Arunachal Pradesh was intercepted at the New Bongaigaon Railway Station in Assam.

The consignment seized at New Bongaigaon Railway Station was being smuggled with the intention of supplying it to Ara in Bihar's Bhojpur district, which is a dry state. The consignment was apprehended before it could be moved further.

The seizure was carried out in a joint operation by the Railway Protection Force (RPF), New Bongaigaon, and the Rangia Crime Prevention and Detection Squad (CPDS) at New Bongaigaon Railway Station in Assam’s Bongaigaon district on January 15.

According to police sources, the joint operations team conducted a raid at the station premises and recovered a total of 72 bottles of liquor that were being smuggled illegally to Bihar.

During the operation, two youths were detained in connection with the seizure. The detained individuals have been identified as Chandan Kumar and Sumanta Kumar.

It may be mentioned that, as per initial reports, Chandan Kumar was said to be a serving personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), currently posted in Leh. The involvement of a serving defence personnel in the case has raised serious concerns, prompting police to delve deeper into the matter.

However, during a conversation with DY365, the Bongaigaon GRP inspector N C Khokhar, clarified that the two youths are either from Uttar Pradesh or Bihar, and that Chandan Kumar is not a serving personnel at the ITBP.

He further stated that the GRP sent them to Bongaigaon police after their medical examination.

The seized liquor and the detained individuals have been handed over to Excise Department for further legal proceedings.

An investigation is underway to ascertain the larger network involved in the liquor trade and to determine whether more individuals are linked to the smuggling racket.
