Vandalism and violence erupts in Assam's Jonai: Local MLA's goons suspected

A violent mob of around 40-50 miscreants attacked the residence of Gitanjali Bori Patir, President of Jana Jagaran Asom's women's wing, in Nepali Basti under Jonai Police Station, on Tuesday evening. The incident, which occurred at approximately 8:30 pm, saw the miscreants vandalizing the gate, doors, windows, and two vehicles, including a scooter, causing significant damage to property.

According to eyewitnesses, the mob initially chased Jana Jagaran Asom's President Lenin Dole, who was returning home from party work, with the intention of killing him. Dole narrowly escaped the attack and took refuge at Patir's residence, where the mob followed him and continued their rampage.

The attack is believed to be a planned attempt to kill Dole and Patir, allegedly led by Rahul Pegu, Bhaskar Dole, and Pranasis Patir. The involvement of MLA Bhuban Pegu's goons has been alleged, sparking concerns of political violence in the area.

The Jonai Police have arrived at the scene and are investigating the incident. The authorities are yet to make any arrests or statements regarding the incident.

Jana Jagaran Asom is a newly formed regional political party based in Dhemaji. The clash is believed to be politically motivated, ahead of the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.
