5.4-Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Andaman Islands; No Casualties Reported

A moderate earthquake of 5.4 magnitude struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday at 2:06 pm IST, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The tremor’s epicentre was located 90 km from the coast, the agency reported via X.

No injuries or damage to property have been reported so far.

International agencies recorded slightly varying intensities: the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) pegged it at 6.0, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS)** measured it at 5.5.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie in Seismic Zone V—India’s highest-risk category—along with northeastern states, parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, and northern Bihar, as classified by the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The region sits on one of the planet’s most active tectonic belts, making it prone to frequent seismic events.
