Was Congress’ ‘People’s Charge Sheet 2026’ Stopped From Circulating? Party Targets Assam Government

GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday alleged that the Assam Police seized printed copies of the party’s “People’s Charge Sheet 2026”, which was formally released during the visit of Priyanka Gandhi to the state in February this year.

According to Congress leaders, the document — which lists twenty allegations against the BJP-led Assam government headed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma — was earlier released in Guwahati.

The party claimed that newly printed copies of the charge sheet were being brought to the city for distribution among the public when the Assam Police intercepted the vehicle carrying the materials and seized them.

Questioning the legality of the move, Assam Mahila Congress president, Mira Borthakur argued that no election notification has been issued yet, and therefore there was no valid justification for the seizure of the documents.

Borthakur alleged that the action was an attempt by the state government to prevent the opposition from reaching out to the public.

“The BJP government is afraid that the Congress is exposing its alleged misdeeds before the people, which is why such tactics are being adopted,” a Congress leader said.

Borthakur further alleged that the Assam Police is functioning under direct instructions from the Chief Minister.

Four Congress workers were reportedly detained in connection with the incident. Those detained include one member of the National Students' Union of India and one from the Indian Youth Congress, along with two other party workers.

The party said it is extending legal support to the detained workers.

While expressing displeasure over the incident, Borthakur clarified that their criticism is not directed at the police force itself.

“The Assam Police is helpless; they act according to instructions from the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma or his cabinet colleague, minister Pijush Hazarika,” Borthakur added.

Expressing confidence ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the party asserted that Congress would return to power in the state. Leaders claimed that the party would form the government within 30 days and that Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi would become the Chief Minister of Assam.

They also warned that once in power, the new government would review police postings and take necessary action if required.

It may be mentioned that the APCC had released the “People’s Charge Sheet 2026” against the BJP-led Assam government, alleging corruption, governance failures and policy lapses during its 2021–2026 tenure.
