GUWAHATI: A daring armed robbery in Guwahati’s Ganeshpara area late Monday night has sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood, once again exposing serious concerns over urban security.

The incident occurred at Sneharoi Apartment, where a gang of armed criminals targeted the residence of businessman Anil Deka in what residents described as a meticulously planned operation. Police sources said four assailants arrived in a white Swift car and carried out the robbery over nearly 40 minutes, moving with precision and confidence.

Anil Deka was not at home at the time, as he had gone to drop his daughter, who is pursuing higher studies abroad. Taking advantage of his absence, the robbers stormed the house and launched a brutal assault on his wife, Karabi Deka, and the family driver, using a pistol and sharp weapons.

According to the victim, the attack began around 9 pm when the main gate was still open. “They rang the doorbell and the moment the door opened, they barged in with a gun and a dagger,” Karabi Deka told reporters.

One of the assailants held her from behind, pressed a dagger to her neck and threatened to slit her throat if she raised an alarm. “They were all speaking in Hindi. I couldn’t shout because one of them tightly covered my mouth,” she said.

She further alleged that the gang dragged her to a corner after spotting the CCTV camera inside the house. “They slapped me, tied my hands with my muffler, and demanded Rs 2 lakh in cash. I told them I didn’t have that much and managed to give Rs 1 lakh instead,” Deka said. The robbers reportedly ransacked every room, looting cash, gold ornaments, and other valuables, and even threatened to cut off her finger after noticing the rings she was wearing. “I had to wash my hand with soap to remove the rings and hand them over before they left. They also assaulted my driver, Manoj, which forced me to give them the rings,” she added.

The family driver was also assaulted during the robbery. Before fleeing, the gang reportedly took away both Karabi Deka’s mobile phone and the driver’s phone.

Deka also suggested that the robbery could have been pre-planned. “Earlier in the afternoon, while I was away from home, our tenant noticed an unknown person entering the premises and surveying the area. After the incident, I realised it might have been a recce,” she said, adding that she has shared her concerns with the Guwahati Police.

CCTV cameras installed inside the apartment captured the entire sequence of events, and police are currently analysing the footage to identify the perpetrators.

Soon after the incident, personnel from Fatasil Police Station rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. Local residents are being questioned as part of the probe.
