Inside the Jinam Valley Encounter: How a Robbery Attempt Ended with an HPC-D Cadre Dead

An alleged Hmar People’s Convention-Democracy (HPC-D) cadre was killed in a police encounter in the Jinam Valley area late Monday night.

According to police sources, the incident took place around 9 PM near Chillei village, a remote border location, when a group of suspected HPC-D militants allegedly tried to rob a vehicle by threatening the driver at gunpoint. During the attempted hold-up, the militants reportedly fired two rounds in the direction of the driver.

A border patrol team of Dima Hasao police witnessed the incident and immediately moved toward the spot. As the team approached, the suspected militants allegedly opened fire, prompting the police to retaliate. In the brief exchange of gunfire that followed, one suspected HPC-D cadre was killed on the spot.

The deceased has been identified as Moody Hmar, a resident of Dima Hasao district. Police suspect the group was involved in extortion and other armed activities in the area.

Following the encounter, additional police teams were deployed across nearby regions as a precautionary measure. Security forces continued intensive search operations through the night to ensure no other armed individuals remained in the vicinity.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased militant has been sent to Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) for post-mortem examination.

A detailed inquiry into the encounter is currently underway.
