Youth Arrested with Firearm During Late-Night Patrol in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A 29-year-old man was apprehended by the Dispur Police in the early hours of Thursday after he was found allegedly carrying an illegal firearm in Guwahati’s Bagharbari area, raising fresh concerns over the circulation of weapons in the city.

According to police sources, the incident took place at around 1 am when a patrolling team noticed a youth moving in a suspicious manner at Bagharbari Chowk near the Homeopathic College in the Panjabari locality. The patrolling party immediately intercepted and searched him. During the search, police recovered a .32 pistol along with three live rounds of ammunition and a magazine from his possession.

The accused has been identified as Krishna Das (29), son of Suren Das. He is currently residing at Panjabari Botaghuli, Janasimal, near Guwahati Public School under Satgaon Police Station. His permanent address is Silapathar near the Railway Station in Dhemaji district, Assam.

Police said all recovered items were seized following due legal formalities, and the accused was brought to the police station for further questioning. Legal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the case.

Interestingly, when confronted by the media, the accused claimed that he had found the pistol lying on the road and was on his way to hand it over to the police. He also described himself as a businessman. However, police officials are investigating the source of the weapon and the purpose for which it was allegedly being carried.

The police officials are also verifying whether the firearm was licensed and examining its ownership details.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain if the accused has any links to criminal activities. Police sources confirmed that previous cases have been registered against him at Dispur Police Station.
