"The ongoing agitation by 108 emergency ambulance workers in Assam has entered its 39th day, with opposition parties intensifying their attack on the state government, accusing it of remaining silent in the face of what they describe as “inhuman treatment” of frontline emergency service staff.Advertisment Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Thursday alleged that the Chief Minister has chosen to remain mute despite growing unrest among the 108 workers, who have been protesting against their alleged illegal termination and deteriorating working conditions. Addressing a joint meeting of opposition parties at the Machkhowa Cultural Complex, Gogoi accused the authorities of systematically undermining the emergency response system. “There is blatant inhumanity in the way 108 employees are being treated. The government is looking the other way while an essential public service is being pushed towards collapse,” he said. The AJP chief further alleged large-scale financial irregularities within the National Health Mission (NHM), claiming that fake bills were generated to siphon off public funds. He accused the NHM Managing Director of maintaining “secret alliances” with private operators to weaken the 108 service. “This is not administrative failure—it is a deliberate attempt to destroy a life-saving public system,” he alleged. Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress President Mira Borthakur echoed similar concerns, strongly condemning the termination of workers, which she termed “illegal and unjust.” Supporting the demands of the protesters, Borthakur said, “The call of the workers is clear: "Remove GVK, save 108." This movement is about protecting a public emergency service that millions depend on.” She added that the treatment of the workers reflected a disturbing disregard for those who serve in critical healthcare roles, particularly in rural and remote areas where 108 ambulances are often the only lifeline. The 108 employees have been on an indefinite sit-in for over five weeks, demanding job security, an end to alleged contractual exploitation, and accountability for what they claim are corrupt practices within the system. A high-level opposition meeting held at Machkhowa saw participation from leaders of multiple parties, including the Assam Jatiya Parishad, Congress, Raijor Dal, CPI(M), and CPI(ML). The parties collectively expressed solidarity with the protesting workers and pledged continued political and public support until their demands are addressed.
