According to Fire Service Deputy Director Nanda Singh Borkala, personnel will remain stationed at the site overnight as precautionary measures continue.

“We have managed to control the fire, but our team will stay here through the night along with five fire tenders,” Borkala said.

Authorities have prohibited public entry into the building, which has suffered extensive damage. Borkala said it will take three to four days to completely clear the structure and conduct a full assessment of how the fire started and the scale of the destruction.

A Fire Safety Officer from State Bank of India’s (SBI) Mumbai office has already reached Guwahati to join the inspection. SBI officials had entered the building on Wednesday, and according to preliminary observations, the bank’s documents appear to be safe. However, the condition of the lockers remains uncertain.

“The lockers cannot be checked right now because the person authorized to open them is not present. Only once they arrive can the lockers be opened,” Borkala added.

Although the fire was doused earlier, officials noticed pockets of smouldering flames on the ground floor on Wednesday. The fifth floor has been completely gutted, with stored garments and numerous mannequins intensifying the blaze.

Fire tenders from multiple locations—including Nagaon, Morigaon, Raha, Rangiya, and Mirza—were brought in to support Guwahati’s units during the firefighting operation.

Authorities will continue monitoring the site as investigations proceed.
