"Guwahati and its surrounding areas are set to experience a prolonged spell of foggy weather over the next seven days, with minimum temperatures likely to fall steadily, according to the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday.Advertisment The outlook, valid from December 29, indicates that dense to moderate fog will dominate morning hours across the city and neighbouring localities, potentially affecting visibility and routine activities. As per the IMD"s seven-day weather forecast for Guwahati city and neighbourhood, moderate to dense fog is expected on December 29 and 30, particularly during the morning hours. From December 31 onwards, fog or mist is likely to persist in the early hours, followed by mainly clear skies later in the day. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain largely stable, hovering between 20°C and 24°C, while night temperatures are forecast to drop to around 12°C to 14°C by the weekend. At Guwahati Airport, maximum temperatures are projected to range between 20°C and 23°C during the forecast period, while minimum temperatures may decline from around 16°C on Monday to nearly 12°C by Sunday. Similar conditions are anticipated across key areas of the city, including Dispur and IIT Guwahati, where foggy mornings are likely to continue through the week, accompanied by a gradual fall in minimum temperatures. In Dispur, the state capital area, the maximum temperature is expected to rise slightly to around 24°C by the end of the week, while minimum temperatures could drop to nearly 13°C. IIT Guwahati and its adjoining areas are also likely to witness comparable conditions, with maximum temperatures stabilising near 23°C and minimum temperatures dipping to around 12°C. The IMD has attributed the prevailing weather conditions to existing atmospheric patterns over the region, which are conducive to fog formation during winter mornings. While no significant rainfall is expected over Guwahati and most parts of Assam during this period, the department has cautioned that reduced visibility due to fog may disrupt early morning travel, including road, rail and air services. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during early hours, particularly commuters and drivers, as visibility may remain low in isolated pockets. The IMD has also indicated that there is unlikely to be any major change in weather conditions beyond this period, suggesting that winter chill and foggy mornings may persist into early January.
