A massive traffic snarl hit the Khanapara stretch of NH-27 on Thursday night after two separate incidents — an overturned oil tanker and a crane’s hydraulic oil leak — turned the Guwahati–Jorabat route dangerously slippery and caused heavy congestion.

According to reports, the chaos began when an oil-carrying tanker lost control and overturned near Ganesh Mandir. Crude oil spilled across the busy highway, making the stretch dangerously slippery and raising concerns of potential accidents. Traffic Police personnel immediately rushed to the site and began regulating movement to prevent mishaps.

In another incident later at night on the same route, a vehicle reportedly rammed into a crane, causing the crane’s hydraulic chamber to burst. The oil that leaked from the chamber spread across the national highway, worsening the risk for passing vehicles.

Following the leak, the Guwahati Traffic Police deployed teams to the spot. Officers sprinkled sand over the affected section to reduce slipperiness and ensure safer passage for commuters. The crane involved in the incident was subsequently removed from the highway, allowing traffic flow to gradually return to normal.

Meanwhile, the traffic situation worsened on Friday morning when a trailer truck suffering a mechanical failure broke down near Green Wood Resort on the Guwahati-to-Jorabat lane, adding yet another layer to the already heavy congestion.

The city traffic police have urged commuters to exercise caution while passing through the area and requested widespread dissemination of the alert in the interest of public safety.
