No Sign Yet: Brahmaputra Holds Back Clues as Five Remain Missing in Guwahati's Kharghuli

The latest update issued at 5:00 PM on December 11 confirmed that the search operation led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is still underway, but the five persons who went missing in the Brahmaputra River at Bhakti Kutir, Kharghuli, have not yet been traced.

As part of the intensified efforts, four rubber boats and a team of deep divers have been deployed to scan the river stretch where the incident occurred.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) in its report stated that the drowning incident took place on the morning of December 10, around 12:37 PM, when a group of eight individuals entered the Brahmaputra near Bhakti Kutir. While three people managed to save themselves and were rushed to the hospital for medical attention, the remaining five were swept away by the strong currents and remain unaccounted for. Their identities have not yet been officially confirmed.

Following the incident, the Pandu Fire & Emergency Services Station (F&ESS) alerted emergency response agencies, leading to the quick mobilisation of both NDRF and SDRF teams. The riverbank area has been secured to prevent civilian access and ensure uninterrupted rescue operations.

The multi-agency operation—comprising NDRF, SDRF and local authorities—remains active, with personnel coordinating resources and conducting continuous river sweeps. Regular situation reports are being issued from the spot as the rescue teams battle challenging water conditions on the Brahmaputra.

As of the latest update, the search for all five missing persons remains ongoing.
