In a major crackdown on organised theft, Guwahati Police apprehended four members of a dacoit gang during a raid at NR Residency Lodge in Hatigaon locality on Saturday morning. The arrested individuals have been identified as Ainur Hussain (31) of Dargahpur, BarpetaEdul Ali (24), Mahibul Ali (32) and Bipul Ahmed (38)—all residents of Khandakarpara under Barpeta district. Police said one more member of the group managed to flee during the operation and efforts are underway to trace him.

During the raid, the accused allegedly attempted to escape by jumping from the second floor of the lodge and running across the surrounding residential areas. However, they were overpowered by the police team that had already secured the perimeter.

A number of tools and stolen items were recovered from their possession, including two Exide batteries, a C-clamp, two pliers, an open-ended wrench, a water-pump plier, and a Maruti Suzuki Fronx vehicle (AS-01-GG-3734) used in the commission of crimes. Police said the gang had placed an “advocate” sticker on the vehicle in an attempt to evade suspicion.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Mrinal Deka, the gang had been operating across Assam and was involved in several burglary cases targeting jewellery stores, warehouses, and commercial establishments. “They first conduct a detailed survey of the victim’s residence, shop or godown and then return at night to execute the crime. All the arrested persons are being interrogated, and further operations are ongoing,” Deka said.

Police sources added that one member of the group conducted reconnaissance across different parts of Guwahati before alerting the rest of the team to assemble at the lodge and plan their operations. The gang is suspected to be involved in robberies not only in the city but also in other districts of the state.

The incident has raised concerns about the increasing misuse of lodges and guest houses by criminal groups. Locals questioned whether adequate verification and monitoring of such establishments are being carried out by the city police officials.

Meanwhile, the Guwahati police have intensified their search to nab the absconding gang member and are investigating the group’s wider network and previous criminal activities.
