Rs 2 Crore Worth Foreign Cigarettes Seized in Guwahati, One Held

Guwahati: A major consignment of foreign cigarettes valued at around Rs 2 crore was seized by police in Guwahati’s Lalmati area, officials said on Thursday.

The operation was carried out by personnel from the Basistha Police Station, who intercepted a truck transporting a large quantity of tobacco products suspected to be illegally smuggled into the state. According to police sources, the consignment was allegedly being transported from Mizoram to Bihar.

During the raid, officers stopped a truck bearing registration number NL01AF9838 and conducted a search, which led to the recovery of several cartons filled with foreign-brand cigarettes. Preliminary estimates suggest that nearly six lakh cigarette sticks were recovered during the operation.

Police said the market value of the seized consignment is believed to be close to Rs 2 crore.

One person, identified as Raju Thakur, was arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt. The accused is currently being interrogated to determine the source of the consignment and to identify others who may be linked to the operation.

Police added that further investigation is underway.
