“We Don’t Oppose Anyone Going to America — Then Why Oppose Post Malone?” CM Questions Critics

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has officially welcomed global music icon Post Malone to the state, calling his visit a historic moment for Assam.

He noted that no global artist of this scale has ever performed in the state before, and the excitement around the event has already attracted international visitors to Guwahati. According to the Chief Minister, such mega concerts have the power to significantly boost Assam’s economy and global visibility.

Sarma clarified that the government has not spent any public money on bringing Post Malone to Assam. Addressing criticism, he said opposing the artist’s visit makes little sense:

“When Angarag ‘Papon’ Mahanta travels to America, no one objects. So why object to Post Malone coming to Assam?”

He added that many people protesting do not even know who Post Malone is. Referencing Bhupen Hazarika’s enduring message of cultural openness, the Chief Minister said Assam should embrace global interactions rather than resist them.

Emphasising the broader impact, Sarma said large-scale concerts promote not only Guwahati but also places like Shillong, helping position Assam on the world map.

“When Post Malone shares updates from the Guwahati show, the world will also learn about places like Kaziranga and our rich culture,” he said.

Sarma remarked that criticism often follows positive initiatives:

“People oppose because I am trying to do something good.”

He concluded humorously that if Post Malone can come to Assam, then perhaps even Shakira could be brought in the future.

Guwahati Gears Up: Khanapara Field Ready for Post Malone’s First-ever Northeast Show

On the ground, preparations at the Khanapara Veterinary Ground are in full swing for tonight’s concert, where the international pop sensation will perform live.

The venue has been extensively decked up, with Assam Police setting up tight multi-layered security around the entire area.

Spectators have already begun entering the venue, with crowds gathering not only from Assam but also from different parts of India to witness the Grammy-winning artist’s performance.

Post Malone is scheduled to perform from 6 PM to 10 PM, marking his first-ever appearance in the Northeast.

CM Says Shakira Could Perform in Guwahati Next Year

Later speaking to reporters amid the buzz around Post Malone’s debut Northeast performance—which has already sold over 20,000 tickets and is being hailed as a game-changer for Assam’s emerging concert economy—Sarma hinted that negotiations in the future could bring Shakira to Guwahati.

“Just like Post Malone is lighting up Guwahati tonight, we may soon welcome Shakira to the stage here. Our new Concert Economy Policy is opening doors for such world-class events, boosting tourism and showcasing the Northeast’s vibrancy,” he said, stressing the government’s push to make Guwahati a premier live entertainment hub alongside cities like Jorhat and Dibrugarh.

Concert Economy Policy: Assam’s Big Cultural Push

The comments come as Assam rolls out its ambitious Concert Economy Policy, adopted in May 2025. The policy offers:

• Viability gap funding

• Streamlined permissions

• Logistical support to organisers

Post Malone’s show—organised by BookMyShow in partnership with Assam Tourism and fully funded by private sponsors—is the first major milestone of the policy. The state government is providing only venue access, security, and logistical support, with no taxpayer money involved.

Sarma highlighted the immense economic potential of global concerts, citing how a Coldplay concert in Gujarat generated more than ₹600 crore.

“Assam is ready to compete healthily with neighbours like Meghalaya, which has already hosted acts like Bryan Adams. Events like these will create jobs, fill hotels, and put us on the global map,” he added.

Growing Excitement Over Shakira Rumours

While there is no official confirmation about Shakira’s concert, the CM’s remarks have sparked excitement among fans and the local entertainment industry. Social media is buzzing with anticipation at the thought of the Colombian superstar’s “Hips Don’t Lie” echoing through the Brahmaputra Valley.
